Neuroscience of colors in health and disease

Encouraged by the success in 2009, The National Neurosciences Society of Romania and SOMS organizes a new brainstorming prize-competition, on the occasion of Brain Awareness Week 2010! We invite you to participate to this event which will take place in the building of the Medical Faculty, at the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest.

MAIN EVENT – Brainstorming competition with prizes

Theme: What can neuroscience teach us about using colors to improve our lives in health and disease?

Organizers: Assoc. Prof. Mihai Moldovan (Copenhagen University), Prof. Leon Zăgrean (“Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy)

Date: Friday, march 19th, 3 p.m.

We plan to organize the main event as a brainstorming session. Students from health sciences (mainly, but not limited to medicine, biology, psychology and sociology) will be encouraged (via posters, forum postings, newsletters) to send by March 14th, 10 p.m. (GMT +2) using the form below a scientific abstract for a 10-minute presentation on a specific question related to “What can neuroscience teach us about using colors to improve our lives in health and disease” e.g.: colors and mood/mood disorders, colors as behavioral signals in humans, colors in neuro-marketing, colors in neuro-esthetics, color synesthesia/color blindness etc. Some suggestions about doing an abstract and an oral presentation in a scientific manner can be found in our resources page.

The best 10 abstracts will be announced on March 16 th, 6 p.m., during the SOMS extraordinary session, to be presented as oral 10-minute slideshows on the main BAW event. The jury will include acknowledged scientists in the Romanian Diaspora. Each presentation will be followed by a 10-minute debate with a broad panel of invited local and international experts including neuroscientists, physicians and psychologists.

As an incentive, the best presentation will be awarded.

Deadline for abstract submission: Sunday, March 14th 2010, 10 p.m. (GMT +2)

Announcement of the finalists: Tuesday, March 16th 2010, 6 p.m., during the SOMS Extraordinary Session

SATELLITE EVENTS:

2) Neuroscience Lab Open Day (March 17th, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Ana-Maria Zagrean, Leon Zagrean):

Students will be guided in the Center for Excellence in Neuroscience, Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

3) Interactive workshop – Neuroscience of colors in health and disease (March 17-18th, 6 p.m., Amphietheatre 5)

Organizer: Asoc. Prof Mihai Moldovan, Copenhagen University and SOMS

Invitees:  Conf. Dr. Arh. Iulius Ionescu, Dean of the Faculty of Interior Architecture, “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture, Bucharest

Conf. Dr. Arh. Carmen Dumitrescu, Interior Design, “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture, Bucharest

Participants will be involved interactively in the design, data collection, analysis and presentation of the results of a small experiment related to neuroscience of colors. Such manifestations were popular during previous BAW arrangements at our university, leading to involvement of students with no previous research experience in projects finalized with published papers in international peer-reviewed journals (Ioan S et al. 2007; Ilie A. et al 2008) where EDAB support was acknowledged.
