Andrei discovered the passion for science since his first year of studentship in Medicine when, following an interview, he was given the opportunity to work in the Neuroscience Laboratory from “Carol Davila” Univ. București, coordinated by Professor Leon Zagrean.

Andrei was remarked by Associate Proffessor Mihai Moldovan from Copenhagen University, a colaborator of the Neuroscience Group in Bucharest. Under his coordination, Andrei published 4 articles in foreign scientific journals indexed in ISI, participated in numerous congresses and received the “Youngest Romanian Investigator Award” form the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research.

Andrei was an active volunteer of SOMS, showing his collegues the importance of research as a student; he was elected scientific secretary and vice-president of SOMS.

After his graduation in Medicine, Andrei received a Welcome Trust scholarship for master and PhD studies in Neuroscience at Oxford University. He graduated the first year with “Distinction”.

Presently, as a SOMS alumni member, he continues to collaborate with our association. Recently, during SOMS Autumn School, he encouraged the students to do research:

“1. It doesn’t matter where you stand at some point, but what you want to become

2. Discover what you really enjoy

3. Find the appropriate mentors

4. Work….“

Andrei is just one of the SOMS members that have become physicians and researchers in famous national and international centers. SOMS team wishes the present students to continue the SOMS tradition of success!

Interview: Dr. Moldovan, SOMS Honorary Member

MM_Clinica_en

In the Clinica Journal, Year I, Nr. 4 (May 15th – June 15th), p 12-23, reproduced integrally online with the redaction’s approval, it has been recently published a bilingual interview of one of the SOMS honorary members, Dr. Mihai Moldovan from Copenhagen University, in which his continuous and successful scientific collaboration with “Carol Davila” University is illustrated.

Dr. Moldovan’s active involvement in the increase of the medical students’ scientific research interest was the starting point of a long-lasting collaboration with SOMS which materialized into interactive workshops and scientific competitions (Brain Awareness Week for 7 years sequentially in collaboration with the National Neuroscience Society of Romania) or summer/autumn schools for students.

Following these events, students without prior scientific experience were involved in projects that were finalized with publications in international journals and that were cited in high-impact journals, including Nature.

Because of his distinctions in the research activity and due to his contributions in developing the students’ scientific activity, Dr. Moldovan became a SOMS honorary member:

Citing Dr. Moldovan, “It’s a curious paradox that you cannot learn how to do research unless you actually do research”, we encourage our colleagues to try various projects till they will find one they will be passionate about!
